Favre-Leuba Sea Raider II Daymatic - High-Beat Automatic - Vintage 1970s
I'm offering a vintage Favre-Leuba Sea Raider II Daymatic, a 1970s high‑beat automatic from one of the oldest names in Swiss watchmaking. I've worked with mechanical watches for around 25 years, and this is a well‑engineered piece with a lot more going on under the hood than the usual 70s fashion watch.
Watch details
• Brand: Favre-Leuba Genève
• Model: Sea Raider II "Daymatic"
• Movement: Favre-Leuba in‑house calibre FL1164, automatic, high‑beat 36,000 vph, day‑date
• Case: Solid stainless steel, angular/hexagonal 1970s design
• Dial: Blue "stardust" style dial with applied baton indices, date at 3 o'clock
• Crystal: Faceted/stepped crystal (likely acrylic or mineral, typical for the period)
• Bracelet: Matching period stainless-steel bracelet (integrated look)
• Functions: Hours, minutes, central seconds, date; automatic winding with hand‑winding
Condition
I'll describe the condition as honestly as I can.
• The case shows honest wear from use: surface scratches and marks consistent with age. The sharp geometry is still present, so it does not appear to have been over‑polished.
• Dial appears original, with period lume on hands and indices. Expect some light patina and minor marks under magnification, as you'd want on a genuine 1970s piece.
• Crystal has light scratches typical of age; with acrylic, most can be improved with polishing if you prefer a cleaner look.
• Bracelet is original‑style with normal stretch and surface wear but still very usable.
Please study the photos carefully - they are part of the description and show the watch as it is.
Movement and running
Inside is Favre-Leuba's FL1164 high‑beat automatic, running at 36,000 vibrations per hour. This is a proper in‑house calibre from the brand's "high‑beat" era, not a generic ébauche.
• The movement runs, but as with any vintage high‑beat watch I strongly recommend a full service if you intend to wear it regularly. High‑beat escapements are more sensitive to dried oils.
• I have not timed it on a machine or guaranteed water resistance. Assume it is not water‑proof and treat it accordingly.
If you are buying this for daily wear, budget for a routine service by a competent watchmaker familiar with vintage high‑beat movements.
About Favre-Leuba & this model
Favre-Leuba is one of the oldest documented Swiss manufacturers, with roots back to the 18th century. In the late 1960s and 1970s they produced a line of robust, technically interesting sports and tool watches - Sea Raider, Harpoon, etc.
The Sea Raider II Daymatic sits in that period: a sporty everyday watch with a distinctive geometric case and a serious high‑beat automatic calibre inside. These are still under‑appreciated compared with the more famous brands, but well‑known among collectors who like 60s/70s Swiss design and in‑house movements.
My notes as a watchmaker
From a watchmaker's point of view, this is a solid candidate for either:
• A sympathetic light restoration (full service, crystal polish or replacement, gentle case clean, keeping the original lines), or
• A straight "honest" collector's piece left largely as found, with all its period character.
Parts for the FL1164 (mainspring, balance staff, keyless work, etc.) are still obtainable through specialist suppliers, which makes long‑term maintenance realistic compared with some obscure calibres of the same era.
Terms:
• No returns for issues related to age‑related wear or the need for routine servicing - that is normal and expected on a 50‑year‑old mechanical watch.
